In 1914, Daisy lives in the quiet New Zealand valley where her family has farmed for generations. A cherished only child with an adored older cousin, and surrounded by a sprawling extended family, her world seems a warm and safe one.
But the Great War is casting its long shadow over New Zealand. Daisy watches in growing fear as more and more of the men leave to fight in Europe, and the War strikes ever closer to the heart of her family.
"Daisy's War" opens five years after the end of "A Second Chance". The settings and many of the characters from the earlier books are revisited, while a new generation is introduced that of Amy's grandchildren.

It was satisfying to catch up with many of the interesting characters I have come to "know" through reading the earlier four books in Shayne Parkinson"s excellent historical drama. Seeing their development from adolescents into adults, caring about their loves, their extended families and their children made me want to know more about how their lives turn out. Daisy's War provided continuity about the earlier characters, while offering new and exciting developments in the lives of their children and grandchildren. I will definitely read the next book, "After the Roses", with eagerness, as well as a little regret, because it bespeaks the end of this marvelous story, which is profound on many levels.Product details

Daisy War edition by Shayne Parkinson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I loved the complete series, I think there were four in all. The first1-3 were difficult stories, but so well written and really gripped your heart and attention. Daisys War was a more hopeful ending.
I cannot even begin to get enough of this series. When I first read the synopsis for "A Sentence of Marriage," I figured why not, it was free...I typically read historical romances set in Victorian era England so I thought that I wouldn't really like a historical novel set in New Zealand, but boy was I wrong! After reading the first book, I was hooked. And "Daisy's War" was no different. The characters are so compelling and realistic. I just have to keep reading to see what is happening in everyone's lives. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book to come out.
I read the entire series and could not put it down. I am big fan of historical novels but this one captured me in a new way - the setting is so alive, I feel like I am on the farm. I love the descriptions of early New Zealand sea town. I especially love being "transported" back in time to another way of life - I am so grateful to have found this series. Huge Thumbs up!
First of all I will say that I enjoyed all the previous books of this series. However, this last one was a big disappointment. Some chapters read more like a travel brochure with all the descriptions of plants, terrain, and insects. I found myself skipping several pages at a time just to get back to the story line. The ending was also very disappointing and I thought a little too abrupt.
The entire "Pomises" series beginning with "The Sentence of Marriage" is great reading. 'Daisy' is technically not one of the Promises series(I think) but a sequel which falls neatly in place. You'll fall in love with Daisy and all the characters.I've e-mailed Shayne twice and she is a sweetheart. She assures me there will be another sequel. Set in New Zealand in the late 1800's, you learn about a culture that I heretofore knew little about. I give her 5 stars!!
I got the first book of the Promises to Keep series free through Bookbub. Sentence of Marriage was a bittersweet story, and I couldn't wait to see where it went in the second book, Mud and Gold. It kept me so captivated, this life of Amy and her family, that I stayed up later than I should have and got up earlier than I needed to in order to spend time with their family. It was only natural to get the third book, Settling the Account, in which the lives of Amy and Charlie reached its climax. I have to say, I actually felt sorry for Charlie by the end of this book.
I was overjoyed to find that the author appeared unable to leave the characters alone, and wrote the sequel, A Second Chance. That story, with its satisfying conclusions to such earlier sadnesses, ended in a way that left me wondering if Mrs. Parkinson might have more up her sleeve for this family.
Then I found Daisy's War. At first I was a little put off by the fact that Daisy's family were referred to by titles and not names. Then it occurred to me that would be how Daisy would know her family--ma, pa, granny, grandma, etc. I was once again drawn into the lives of the generations of this family. I cried when the Great War took family members, because by now it almost seemed as if they were MY family, too.
Thank you, Mrs. Parkinson, for a thoroughly satisfying couple of weeks of reading. If you should find that you need to share even further about the Leith family, please know that I will be more than happy to share the journey with you.
I love this series. It is a fast easy read, telling the life story of two families in New Zealand in the 1800's. Following their way of life with the changes in society, and the advances in everyday living. The ways of treating women in the 1800's , marriage at early age, schooling for boys and girls, shows how much our way of life has changed. I am now on the last book in the series and feel like I am loosing friends. Shayne is a outstanding writer , brings her characters to life.
